The Toyota Aqua goes on sale today in Japan

Toyota has launched the Aqua in Japan, and it will stand out for improving on the Prius’s fuel consumption using the same hybrid technology.

As Toyota had announced at the time, the Toyota Aqua began sales today in Japan. This kind of Toyota Yaris hybrid will be sold in the Land of the Rising Sun for just over 16,000 euros at the exchange rate (1.69 million yen), and sales of 12,000 units a year are expected.

The Toyota Aqua will homologate really good consumption figures, with just 2.5 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle (the same figure it was homologated with in Japan). The engine combined with the electric motor has a total output of 100 CV.

The Aqua’s 1.5-litre petrol engine, slightly smaller than the Prius’s 1.8, uses the same hybrid technology refined through the use of the Atkinson cycle popularised in the Prius and other models outside the Toyota range.

The Aqua comes equipped with ABS, EBD (electronic brake-force distribution), stability control and traction control. Sales in countries outside Japan will begin in April, when the first units arrive in the US, before reaching Europe.
