The Wuling Zhiguang is GM's best-selling vehicle in the world

Wuling-Zhiguang

Some days ago we were telling you about the good moment of Ford, placing the Ford Focus as the best-selling car in the world last year, and how the Fiesta managed to occupy the same privileged place in its segment. Now it’s time to talk about GM, which also has its best-selling model; and it is neither a saloon, nor a convertible, nor a coupe.

The best-selling model of the American brand is the Wuling Zhiguang, a van manufactured in China in partnership with SAIC and Wuling. With 768,870 units sold last year, it also ranks as the fourth best-selling vehicle in the world, behind only the Ford Focus, the Toyota Corolla and the Ford F-Series pick-ups.

In fact, the Wuling Zhiguang surpasses the Chevrolet Cruze in the ranking of the world’s best-selling vehicles, as well as other famous cars such as the Volkswagen Golf. At first this may seem rather curious, but it is less so when we consider the number of potential customers this van has in China, relative to the country’s population. Moreover, at a price equivalent to 3,000 euros, the offer is irresistible.

This van, which has become a true celebrity on the list of best-selling models, offers what is needed for a basic cargo vehicle, with no pretensions to luxury or premium finishes. It has three different engine types of around one litre of displacement and several configurations offering a double cab and a closed version.

But GM has no great objection to the Wuling Zhiguang being its representative on the best-seller list, since the profit margin it earns in China from manufacturing and selling these models is the grand prize.
