This is the difference between a halogen headlight, a xenon one and an LED one

In the following video we can see a comparison between the lighting systems of a Volkswagen Golf (halogen), and two Porsche 911s (xenon and LED).

We all know that xenon headlights were a huge improvement over conventional halogen bulbs, both in terms of safety and design. But what about the next step on the evolutionary ladder? Are LED lights as superior to xenon headlights as xenon headlights are to halogen lights? Do LED lights offer a sharper night-time view? YouTuber Nick Murray gives us a fairly convincing answer to these questions.

In the following video we can see three vehicles with different lighting systems: a Volkswagen Golf (sixth generation) with halogen headlights, a Porsche 911 with xenon headlights and another 911 with LED lights. Naturally, the age of each model affects the technology used; a halogen headlight today is not the same as one from eight years ago. Even so, the video offers a useful reference for the kind of light each type of headlight produces.

Among the conclusions drawn from this video, it could be highlighted that the price premium of LED headlights (compared with xenon) is justified, although, as we have said, this depends on the type of technology used, since there are many kinds of LED. These headlights produce light in a very different way (in some cases their light can even be less powerful than that of a halogen headlight), but they are smaller, last longer and consume far less energy than xenon units. A picture is worth a thousand words, so the best thing is for you to judge for yourselves…

How much would you be willing to pay to have LED headlights fitted to your car?
