This is the fine the DGT will impose on you for using your smartwatch while driving

Did you know that using a smartwatch while driving carries a fine of 200 euros and the loss of 6 points from your driving licence?

As you surely know, driving while handling your smartphone carries a hefty fine and can lead to the withdrawal of up to six points from your driving licence. Well, if you drive using a smartwatch, you should know that it also carries a fine and is a practice prohibited under the new Traffic Law.

The new Traffic Law came into force on 21 March, and with it come the harshest penalties. This regulation, in addition to penalising the use of electronic devices such as smartphones, also applies to smartwatches, since these devices allow you to operate your phone through the watch.

The Directorate-General for Traffic, led by Pere Navarro, has stated in this regard that “since they do not need to be held in the hand to be used, they do not interfere with driving. They receive the same treatment as hands-free devices.” Therefore, they are legal, but officers can fine you for using them.

As Pere Navarro has stated, these devices are legal because they do not need to be held in the hand, but handling them while driving is prohibited and, of course, is a punishable offence, just as with any

electronic device or navigator.

Therefore, wearing a Conducir Actividades Incivicassmartwatch on your wrist while driving does not incur a fine. However, handling it while in motion is punishable, constituting an offence that carries a fine of up to 200 euros and the loss of 6 points from your driving licence.

Don’t take the risk. If you need to check something important, find a safe place, stop, and attend to your smartphone or smartwatch with the vehicle switched off. Your safety comes first, so don’t let yourself be distracted at the wheel.
