TopGear turns a Lotus Excel into a submarine

We show you the moment Richard Hammond takes a stroll underwater in a Lotus Excel, specially built as a tribute to the Lotus Esprit from James Bond.

It’s been a while since we last talked about TopGear, but interest in the (whether you like it or not) best car show in television history hasn’t faded at all. We want to show you part of the TopGear episode dedicated to 50 years of James Bond films.

The TopGear producers have now dared to build a submersible Lotus, similar to the Lotus Esprit that starred in the film The Spy Who Loved Me and that could also travel along the seabed. This time, however, TopGear opted for a cheaper and easier-to-find option that’s simpler to adapt: an Lotus Excel that does a pretty good job.

Using controls beside the steering wheel, which operate the planes located at the rear, the Lotus can rise, dive and also turn. Two motors were placed at the back to provide the necessary propulsion.

The truth is that at some points you wonder whether it’s really underwater, but at least at the beginning we see the Excel sinking. You can watch the video below.
