The Concept-I was designed by the CALTY Design Research studio in Newport Beach (California). It introduces an advanced artificial intelligence system that learns from the driver and grows with them. It anticipates users’ needs, inspires their imagination and enhances their quality of life.

Yui is the name given to the artificial intelligence system of the Toyota Concept-I, and it uses advanced automation technologies to enhance driving safety. Although in certain circumstances the user can choose between autonomous or manual driving, the Toyota Concept-I constantly monitors the driver’s attention and the state of the road with the aim of increasing the level of autonomous driving when necessary.

The interior has been designed with fluid lines and specific shapes so that the artificial intelligence can communicate information through light effects, projections and sounds. There are no center consoles; information appears where and when it is needed. Coloured lights in the footwell area indicate whether the vehicle is in autonomous or manual mode, projectors in the rear tray display images on the seat pillar to warn of blind spots, and a windscreen-projected information system helps the driver keep their attention on the road.

The exterior of the Toyota Concept-I also interacts with the world around it. The Yui system appears on the exterior door panels to greet the driver and occupants as they approach the vehicle. The rear of the prototype also displays messages warning of possible hazards.

According to Toyota’s Senior Vice President of Automotive Operations, Bob Carter,

At Toyota we are aware that the most important thing is not whether future vehicles will be equipped with automated or connected technologies. What truly matters is the experience of the people who interact with those vehicles. Thanks to the Concept-i and the power of artificial intelligence, we believe the vehicle of the future will be able to interact with people in turn
