Toyota plans a small sports car below the GT86

Plans at Toyota include, in the medium term, a new sporty model. It would be an entry-level model in the range, sitting below the already well-known GT86.
It seems that the top brass at the Japanese company are satisfied with the result of the GT86, so they intend to keep going and make Toyota a brand that is one step more sporty.
The leadership of Toyota is in favour of continuing along the line set by the GT86. In addition, there are certain key points that are non-negotiable whatever model is developed, such as rear-wheel drive, a front-mounted engine, and the pursuit of lightness and driving pleasure above other priorities such as outright performance.
While the small sports car below the GT86 is the next step, Toyota’s coupé family would not stop growing there, since there is also speculation about another model, this time above the GT86, which would mark the peak of the sporting range.

The small sports coupé would be built on a new platform, although the knowledge gained from building the GT86 would make things much easier and bring costs down too.
There is also speculation about a collaboration with another manufacturer in its development, similar to the Toyota GT86, developed jointly with Subaru and its BRZ. On this occasion, rumours point strongly to BMW, with whom the Japanese brand has already signed a powertrain collaboration agreement.
Nothing is known about the name yet, although some already historic ones have a good chance, such as the MR2 or the Celica.
