Volkswagen plans a cheaper Touareg for the US and China

The Volkswagen Touareg has significant rivals in the US, given that the BMW X5 costs almost the same and that a brand as well-known in North America as Lexus offers the RX350 considerably cheaper than the Touareg, to name a couple of examples. The SUV market is very crowded and competitive in the US, so Volkswagen will be studying a vehicle that would mean a better deal for consumers.
Although it will not be the Touareg as such, the brand’s goal will be to have a 4×4 of considerable size, like the Touareg, though much cheaper than the current model. And, along the way, to try to place the vehicle in China, where it could compete on price against similar European or Japanese vehicles.
The new model would be built in the same plant as the new Volkswagen Passat, recently unveiled at the NAIAS.
