Volkswagen unveils the New Compact Coupé hybrid in Detroit

The Volkswagen Compact Coupé presented today at NAIAS is the next effort by Volkswagen to have a hybrid clearly aimed at the North American market and, stylistically speaking, sitting not far from the Scirocco. Although the media had nicknamed the Compact Coupé the “Jetta Coupé”, the truth is that it is far from being a continuation of the popular (in North America) Jetta.
The Compact Coupé will be a vehicle from which the New Midsize Sedan will surely be derived (although nothing guarantees that the latter will be a hybrid, there is a likelihood), and it shares the same architecture as the Up! Lite, which had such a good reception at the Los Angeles show. In fact, the hybrid system is similar, but instead of a small diesel engine, Volkswagen this time opted for the 1.4 TSI engine, coupled with a 20 kW hybrid motor and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The combined hybrid system and 1.4 engine deliver fuel consumption figures hovering around 4.2 l/100 km and a top speed of 225 km/h. That is more than enough for a car of this kind.
Next, the size of the concept is reminiscent of the Jetta’s, although it is still unknown whether this will be the new Jetta or whether we would already be on the threshold of its end. The Jetta Coupé has been off the market for about 20 years, so it could be an excellent opportunity to revive it with hybrid technology or to make way for new models, not forgetting that the Jetta has always sold very well in North America.
