VOLVO CONCEPT 26, the luxury of time behind the wheel of the autonomous car

Volvo is working on various solutions for autonomous driving, not only on the technology that allows the car to drive automatically, but also on offering solutions for comfort, ease and making good use of time while the car takes care of the journey.

Technology in cars is not only applied to engines, improving their performance and making them more efficient, but also seeks to make driving more pleasant and enjoyable. So it is no surprise that Volvo has presented a cabin prototype that allows the user of a vehicle with autonomous driving to enjoy their time in comfort while the car takes care of everything else.

The name of this prototype comes from the time that, according to Volvo, we spend behind the wheel when going to and returning from work, 26 minutes that consume part of our time. In a car with autonomous driving, that time could be used to do anything else, so the company has developed a cabin system that frees up more space to do whatever you need without being cramped.

You can have time to enjoy multimedia content, listen to music or prepare any kind of presentation for work, without having to simply sit in front of the steering wheel, even when you are not driving. With the Volvo Concept 26 system there are three modes, driving, creating and relaxing. When autonomous driving is selected, the seat moves back, the steering wheel retracts and a large screen appears in front of the driver so they can enjoy multimedia.

This system being tested may be very useful for offering alternatives while the car takes care of the driving. It is expected that in the coming years this system can be tested, when trials begin with a fleet of this type of vehicle on the roads of Gothenburg, Sweden, during 2017, so it will be then that we see in practice how the Swedish manufacturer’s proposals work.
