Volvo will launch a new carsharing service
The new shared mobility platform will be managed by Sunfleet, a pioneering company in the shared vehicle sector.
Volvo has launched a new shared mobility platform as part of its strategy to expand this service. The new business unit will be led by Sunfleet, one of the world’s first shared vehicle companies, operated by Volvo since 1998. Based in Sweden, this company will be responsible for running the core operations of the new carsharing platform from Volvo.
The Swedish carmaker will offer a completely new range of mobility services, as it believes that changing consumer expectations will lead to a decline in private car ownership in the future.
“Private car ownership will not disappear, but as car manufacturers we have to accept that it will decrease and, more importantly, that it will change. We have a profitable model with a proven track record in our home market, which we intend to build on as we develop a global model,” says Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.
All the details of Volvo Cars’ renewed shared mobility strategy will be made public over the coming months, but the company intends to complement its current traditional car ownership models with a range of on-demand mobility solutions.
“Today, the concept of mobility and car ownership is changing. By recognising this fundamental and rapid change in individual mobility habits and responding to it, we make sure that Volvo remains relevant in the eyes of the consumer,” Samuelsson noted.
