What are the most dangerous roads in Spain?
Road accident rates are a problem that efforts are being made to reduce. However, there are still quite a few dangerous roads in Spain
RACE has published a report that assesses the risk on Spanish roads, taking into account the number of accidents over the last three years, their severity and their relationship with the characteristics of the road. Therefore, this equation makes it possible to identify the stretches of road where a person is most likely to have an accident, that is, which are the most dangerous roads in Spain.
There are three Autonomous Communities that are the most dangerous in this respect: Aragon, Castile and León and Catalonia. Aragon takes the top spot, and one in four of the analysed stretches has a high accident risk of 25.98%.
Three black spots that have a bad habit of repeating themselves
The most dangerous roads remain so over the years, so it is common for these stretches to reappear in the black category, that is, the most dangerous of all. Therefore, the following stretches are those that have reappeared on all of the black spot lists over the last three years:
|
Road |
Start km | End km | Province |
|
N-642 |
0 | 8.2 | Lugo |
| N-260 | 117.3 | 179.5 |
Girona |
| N-234 | 398.2 | 408.4 |
Soria |
These are the most dangerous roads in Spain
The report has placed a total of 8 stretches in the most dangerous category: black. The dubious honour goes to the N-541 in the province of Ourense. Specifically, between kilometres 23.5 and 33.6, a stretch of just over 10 kilometres that has claimed two lives and left seven people seriously injured so far in 2019. Thelist of the most dangerous roads in Spain is as follows:
|
Road |
Start km | End km | Province | Serious accidents in 2019 |

23.5 | 33.6 | Ourense | 7 |

It is no coincidence that all the stretches in this list belong to national roads. These 8 roads are the most dangerous in Spain, but they are not the only ones where the likelihood of an accident is high.
These dangerous roads are not the only ones in Spain
Below the fearsome black road category is the red category which, although carrying a lower risk, still represents dangerous points. This category is considerably broader, with a total of 53 roads listed in it.
Of the 50 most dangerous roads in Spain, a total of 32 have speed cameras installed, which is one of the measures the DGT has taken to try to reduce the accident rate on these roads.
Therefore, if you use these roads regularly or occasionally, take extra safety precautions and, of course, forget about distractions at the wheel. If you want to see the most common causes of accidents, don’t miss our report on how traffic accidents happen in Spain.
In case you are unlucky enough to be involved in a collision on the road, we leave you with the article from our colleagues at Highmotor on how to act in the event of an accident.
