What is adaptive cruise control?

Adaptive cruise control is one of those technologies that people don’t seem to get used to easily. The blame lies not so much in its complexity, but in its usefulness and adaptability on journeys. Today we will explain what it consists of.

One of the most common technologies in the automotive world in recent times is adaptive cruise control. This system can maintain a programmed speed and detect other vehicles sharing our route in order to adapt.

This system promises to provide greater safety and add comfort to your journeys. The car will be able to maintain speed without the need to press the accelerator, which can reduce fatigue during long drives.

Another important factor is that it can detect cars close to our vehicle and brake on its own or even force a lane change if necessary. This seems to be the dream solution for traffic jams. However, does it work as well as we are led to believe?.

The truth is that, in my view, this is one of those cumbersome systems that you end up switching off in new cars, in most situations. Especially in the past, it was a technology in its infancy with plenty of room for improvement; however, today, especially on long trips, it must be acknowledged that it is a real pleasure to use.

The usefulness of this system on long road journeys is evident. Picture the typical situation of a fairly clear road during a 400-kilometre drive. The usual approach in this situation is to press the accelerator constantly with a certain amount of force.

Thanks to this system, you no longer need to accelerate and can set the exact speed you want the car to maintain. This is especially useful for avoiding speeding fines too, since you forget about having to accelerate, and the car will keep the speed you have set.

Of course, it will adapt to the situation: if the car detects an obstacle ahead, another vehicle, etc., it will reduce speed to adapt until it can resume its set speed.

The system is not perfect, and driver supervision is mandatory; however, it helps considerably against fatigue on long journeys.

The only drawback is that the system requires extra concentration on your part, especially when it comes to changing lanes. Otherwise, the car will detect that it is too close to the vehicle in front and will brake while you change lanes, which can turn into an unnecessary risky situation for you and others.

The best use of this system is on motorways, with a clear road and keeping speed within the correct limit so that you avoid fines. That way the car drives itself and you only have to worry about steering.
