What is the car with the most kilometres in history?

The fascinating story we bring you stars the car with the most kilometres in history, a Volvo P1800S that has covered its entire mileage with a single owner.

The kilometres shown on our car’s odometer are one of the key points when deciding whether to replace it with another. Moreover, when it comes to buying a used car, it becomes one of the aspects we look at most closely, since if it has high mileage, we tend to assume it has little life left. However, once you learn the distance covered by the car with the most kilometres in history, your perception will change.

Yet it is true that we often give this figure too much importance. The kilometres a vehicle has covered do matter, but far more important is its maintenance and the use it has had over all that distance.

Let us explain: it is quite possible that a car with 250,000 kilometres that has been properly maintained and well driven is in better condition than one with 100,000 kilometres that has received no attention whatsoever. Furthermore, it makes a big difference whether the kilometres were covered on motorways or in urban environments, since it is in the city where the car’s mechanics wear out the most.

This Volvo P1800S holds the Guinness World Record for the car with the most kilometres

Proof that a vehicle’s mileage is a mere number is our protagonist today. It is a Volvo P1800 that holds the Guinness World Record for the car with the most kilometres to its name. The key factors behind earning this honourable title have been exquisite maintenance and an owner who always drove it with affection and care.

The story of our protagonist is really a love story: love between the car and its owner, or in other words, Irv Gordon and his Volvo P1800S. Irv was born in 1940 and lived in New York. He worked as a schoolteacher, so he commuted to a school no less than 100 kilometres from his home. He therefore needed a reliable car to cover the 200 kilometres a day he had to drive to go to and from work.

Gordon owned a Chevrolet Corvair that turned into a complete nightmare, as it spent more time in the workshop than on the roads of American motorways. So, on 30 June 1966, he decided to acquire what would become the “other love” of his life: a beautiful red Volvo P1800S. He paid 4,150 dollars for the Swedish coupé, a price equivalent to around 28,000 euros today.

Irv Gordon and his Volvo P1800S were tireless travellers

The very first weekend that Gordon and this Volvo P1800S joined their lives together, they covered no less than 2,400 kilometres, so the following Monday he already took it in for its first service. This was quite a declaration of intent, since eight years later the Volvo had already clocked up more than 800,000 kilometres on its odometer.

This Volvo underwent exhaustive maintenance at Irv’s trusted workshop, so he surely followed these 10 tips before taking the car to the garage. However, it is not enough to take it to the specialist only when needed; the car must be looked after day after day. The vehicle was always driven gently, at not too high speeds, and always bearing in mind that its mechanics were there to be pampered. Our protagonist pampered it so well that the Volvo P1800S reached 400,000 kilometres with all its components as they had left the factory.

It was in 1987 that our two protagonists passed the million-mile mark, or in other words, just over 1,609,000 kilometres. After 21 years of tireless service, Irv decided it was time to rebuild the engine as a precaution, even though the car did not ask for it.

This story caught the attention of Volvo for the first time, so the Swedish brand decided to reward his loyalty by gifting him an exclusive Volvo 780 Coupé. Gordon received it with open arms, but he continued to use his inseparable companion to travel the United States from coast to coast.

Both Gordon and the Volvo P1800S kept up their untiring journeys, so by 2002 the car had surpassed two million miles, that is, more than 3.2 million kilometres covered. The top management of Volvo once again took notice of this incredible story, so they gave Gordon a Volvo C70 to give rest to his elderly vehicle. Yet nothing could be further from the truth: Irv Gordon swore eternal love to his Volvo P1800S and that was never going to change.

Seven years later, in 2009, the engine of the Swedish coupé was rebuilt once again after 22 years of service, as the enormous mileage had caused the engine to lose compression. Once this was done, Gordon carried on doing what he loved most: driving his shining, long-standing Volvo. In 2013, the car broke the incredible barrier of three million miles (specifically 3,039,122 miles certified by Guinness World Records) while driving along the roads of Alaska.

After surpassing this figure, Volvo felt they should provide him with a more comfortable vehicle for his journeys, since doctors had advised our protagonist to take things easier, so they gifted Irv a Volvo CX60. However, Irv Gordon was a man of habit and could not imagine life anywhere but behind the wheel of his classic.

The sad moment of this wonderful story came on 15 October 2018, when the daughter of the Volvo P1800S announced on a social network that her father had passed away in China. His lifelong companion had at that moment clocked up a staggering 3,260,257 miles, that is, 5.25 million kilometres.

We do not know the whereabouts of the Volvo P1800S that holds the title of car with the most kilometres in history, but without a doubt, it should be in a museum of the brand next to a portrait of Irv Gordon. And this story has been like that of the happiest marriages: together until death do us part.
