Where would Spanish drivers spend their time in an autonomous car?

A study carried out by Goodyear with the London School of Economics shows that most Spaniards would talk to the other passengers if they were driving an autonomous car.

Goodyear has conducted a study with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), with the aim of understanding drivers’ attitudes towards the arrival of autonomous mobility. The research gathers the opinions of some 12,000 respondents from up to 11 European countries. The survey results show how drivers would spend the time saved by driving a fully autonomous vehicle.

The study suggests that 54% of Spanish respondents would devote themselves to talking to the other passengers in an autonomous car. Browsing the internet is the second most popular option among Spaniards (37%), followed by sending messages or talking on the phone (36%). 27% of Spanish drivers would spend the journey reading a book, and 25% would take the opportunity to check their email and reply to messages. Finally, only 18% would use the trip to sleep or watch a film.

The study also gathers information on the characteristics that autonomous cars should have, according to the respondents. In this regard, the top priority for Spaniards is protecting the environment (68%), followed by the ability to communicate with other vehicles on the road (52%) and being electric (48%).

“It is very positive to see that Spanish drivers care about autonomous cars being environmentally friendly. At Goodyear we strive to manufacture more eco-friendly tyres, both in their materials, their performance and their manufacturing process,” says Alberto Granadino, General Manager of Goodyear Dunlop Iberia.
