Will the Tata Nano be getting a CVT gearbox?
Although we still enjoy manual gearboxes, the truth is that more and more people are becoming less willing to keep driving manual cars, especially city cars like the Tata Nano. If everything goes as Tata Motors is planning, the Tata Nano will be fitted with a continuously variable transmission in the near future.
The idea has already taken shape within Tata (for the past two years), which is looking for an alliance with a Canadian automatic transmission company called C-tech, which would supply the components needed for the Nano to receive a transmission of the type mentioned.
In this way, the little car would offer the option of a more comfortable transmission for urban driving, the environment in which the Nano performs well. The ambitions to export the Nano to Europe, the US and Latin America, and to improve the sagging sales in its home country, may well be revived if Ratan Tata manages to put a reliable CVT in the Nano.
