WTCC: new weight rules and the cars eligible to take part in 2011

The vehicle weights and the cars that will be eligible to compete in the 2011 WTCC have already been announced. In principle, all cars with S2000 specifications will be allowed to take part, including the new 1.6-litre turbo engine.
The other engines that will be eligible, in addition to the 1.6-litre, will be two-litre naturally aspirated engines and turbocharged diesel engines. Cars with the new 1.6 engines will have a base weight of 1,150 kilos with front-wheel drive and 1,170 kilos with rear-wheel drive.
Front-wheel-drive cars with normally aspirated two-litre engines will have the same base weight as those fitted with the new 1.6-litre engines, 1,150 kilos. Rear-wheel-drive cars with the old engines will only be five kilos heavier, at 1,155 kilos. The base weight of those fitted with diesel engines will be 1,170 kilos.
The season will begin with all cars level in terms of the weight compensation provided for under the regulations, since each car will carry a 40-kilo ballast, added to the weights in the previous paragraph, for the first race of the year.
