Little by little, electric vehicles are becoming more popular, and there are companies that convert traditional cars into electric ones at a low cost

Electric cars are becoming more and more popular. Manufacturers are increasingly committed to this type of mobility and are ready for zero-emission vehicles to move freely through areas restricted to vehicles that emit polluting gases. That said, the price of these electric vehicles is still quite high, which may lead users to forget about these cars. But is it possible to convert a combustion-engined car into an electric vehicle?

The answer is yes. It is possible to work on combustion-engined cars and completely replace the powertrain with a battery and electric motor, along with the entire associated system. In fact, there are more and more specialist companies dedicated to this, which can offer a very effective solution.

One of these companies, according to our colleagues at Autocar, is New Electric in Dublin, one of the first to dedicate itself to this work on cars with traditional engines. It is a company that comes from the naval industry and has worked on boats but has brought its experience to the automotive world.

To test it, they used a model they found on the used vehicle market: a Lexus GS 450h that they bought for a little over 500 euros, and whose combustion engine they replaced with an electric system. The price of that kit is 6,650 euros and consists of a battery that provides a range of 320 kilometres and an electric motor that delivers a power equivalent to 300 CV.

To this price the cost of the labour must be added, but you can get an electric car based on a model with an internal combustion engine for less than the price of an electric car of similar capacity. If the owner carries out the conversion, provided they know how to do it, the cost drops considerably.

So, is it worth making this conversion from combustion car to electric car? Well, as always, it depends on several factors, but you can find on the New Electric website what that electrification kit you are looking for may cost. It is a good starting point for considering this possibility. In the video you can see how they work and how they convert a Volvo NL. Interesting, to say the least.
