130 km/h on certain motorway sections and 90 km/h on conventional roads

The Dirección General de Tráfico has presented a draft proposal to amend the General Traffic Regulations in Spain. Among the proposals, there is mention of setting a maximum speed of 130 km/h on motorways that meet certain conditions, 30 km/h on streets, and 90 on conventional roads with a 1.5-metre hard shoulder.
This draft proposal is nothing more than putting on paper certain plans that already existed since last year, to raise the maximum speed allowed on motorways. As with the original proposal, the conditions that must be met to travel at that speed will involve a road in perfect condition, good visibility and other specific conditions that would permit traffic at that speed.
The original proposal has not changed at all regarding the maximum speed on conventional roads, which would remain at 90 km/h. As for streets, some municipalities are already applying a 30 km/h limit, which could be included in the final version of the traffic regulation reform. Failing to wear a seatbelt will be penalised even more, as virtually everyone will have to wear one and no exceptions will apply, not even for occupants of emergency vehicles. The same will apply to mandatory helmet use for cyclists and motorcyclists.
The proposal should be approved by the Consejo Superior de Tráfico, which brings together several bodies related to road safety in our country, so some changes may be made before it is published as an official amendment.
