A couple has set a new benchmark by covering a total of 1,619 km in a Ford Focus 1.0 Ecoboost on a single tank of fuel. The overall average consumption works out at 3.3 litres, achieved by maintaining a constant speed of 60 km/h.

It sounds like science fiction, but it is anything but. This is a real news story that shows the level of efficiency today’s vehicles can reach when driven by skilled hands.
In this case, we are talking about a Norwegian couple who covered 1,619 km on a single tank.

The vehicle they chose was a Ford Focus, equipped with the award-winning 1.0 Ecoboost engine producing 125 CV, which is officially rated at an average consumption of 5 litres per 100 km. In this case, the overall figure dropped to 3.3 litres per 100 km, a figure more typical of a motorcycle.

This remarkable adventure took its protagonists across Norway, Sweden and Finland in a journey that lasted 28 hours, equivalent to an average speed of roughly 60 km/h. The entire route was monitored by the Norwegian police.
To cover such an enormous distance, the drivers applied the principles of efficient driving to the extreme, maintaining a constant, sustained speed wherever possible and using the brakes only when absolutely necessary. In fact, they have stated that they only braked when “the reindeer crossed the road”.

Another measure they took was not using the heating or the air conditioning, even though temperatures throughout the journey ranged from 0 to 22 degrees.
It is worth remembering that the 1.0 Ecoboost engine has been one of the most award-winning engines of recent years, thanks to its 3 cylinders and 1.0 litre capacity, which, combined with direct injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing, allow it to deliver up to 125 CV.
