70% of drivers feel safer with Xenon lights

The German Automobile Club has published a study showing that xenon headlights offer between twice and three times the lighting capacity on the road than conventional headlights. In this way greater visibility is guaranteed not only at long range (given their greater reach) but also at short range, since the light also spreads to the sides.

The same study reveals that only 70% feel safer with these lights. This is a curious figure that stems from the fact that many drivers have them slightly misaligned and dazzle oncoming drivers: if we add the greater height of modern vehicles, if we drive a car from 10 years ago, it’s almost certain that an SUV will dazzle us with xenon.

However, in a post we saw a few months ago we were able to verify how poor lighting is one of the main risk factors in road accidents. It is therefore no surprise that, before long, governments will begin to make these lighting systems mandatory on vehicle safety grounds, just as was done with the seatbelt.

The high price they carry on some models and the little importance that many vehicle buyers give to safety mean we don’t see them as often on the road. Making them compulsory would lower their cost as they would be produced on a much larger scale and conventional lamps would be phased out, and it could reduce road deaths by 42%. Let’s hope we see them on every car soon.
