A car is not a mobile internet device, says the NHTSA

The NHTSA warned manufacturers that a car was not built to tweet better or update Facebook more comfortably. It remains a means of transport that demands all possible attention. This was said at a telematics conference held no less than in Detroit.

Emergency systems in the event of accidents, remote vehicle monitoring and navigation were mentioned as acceptable. However, in recent times manufacturers have not stopped competing with one another to see what else they can fit as standard equipment in terms of entertainment. We have already seen how these initiatives have failed for good.

The brands’ commitment is to offer what customers want, together with what each government requires in terms of safety. It is a great commitment and the sad reality: most people are very focused on what is being said on Facebook or Twitter while they drive, and few care whether the car comes with eight or nine airbags or a stability system as standard equipment.

It is not an antenna, it is not a router, nor a modem. A car is… a car: a small or medium-sized motor vehicle intended for transporting people, with a capacity of no more than nine seats (RAE Dictionary).
