A passenger screen that won't distract the driver is on its way

To solve the problem of digital passenger screens distracting the driver, Continental has presented a passenger screen that doesn’t.

One of the big problems being encountered by the most modern and well-equipped vehicles is the incorporation of screens for use by front-seat passengers. These screens are beginning to be seen as a risk to drivers, so there is a push to limit their use for entertainment while driving. In fact, Tesla has already eliminated the possibility for the front-seat passenger to play on the front screen.

The brand Continental is not only known as a tyre manufacturer, but it also works on consumer technology and is offering a solution to prevent the passenger screen from becoming a problem for driving. The digital screen it has developed for the passenger area eliminates the nuisance caused by its backlighting and avoids distracting the driver.

A more discreet screen

The solution proposed by Continental is a dynamic screen that features a private mode which dims its brightness. In this way, in low-light moments it is not bothersome for the driver, who receives no external stimuli that could spoil the driving experience.

When this display mode is activated, the driver receives barely 1% of the screen’s light, so it is neither bothersome nor harmful to the eyes. Meanwhile, the user seated in the passenger seat loses none of the features offered in normal mode. The user experience remains very appealing and can be enjoyed without problems.

The screen designed by Continental, according to the company, offers the highest standards of contrast, light density, image uniformity and energy efficiency. Switching the viewing mode takes only the press of a button and minimises driver disturbance.

For now there is no model in which this type of screen will be installed, but it could soon appear among the technological equipment of several future models. This does not eliminate all distractions, such as the passenger’s behaviour and their reactions to what they see on the screen, but it does reduce one of the problems: excessive lighting in the cabin.
