ABB E-mobility unveils its new compact 50 kW destination charger

DC charging points have typically been limited, due to their high cost, to stations located along major roads. ABB aims to change this situation with its new C50 charger.

ABB E-mobility has begun commercialising its C50 charging point, a compact charging solution designed for specific destinations, with a power output of 50 kW. This charger is remarkably compact, measuring just 23.5 centimetres in depth, and features a 21.5-inch touchscreen.

According to the company, this charging point is ideal for matching the typical dwell times of visitors at many locations, which often last between 60 and 90 minutes, enabling a smooth turnover of vehicles.

ABB points out that AC charging is too slow to complete a recharge in just one hour, while installing DC charging points is too costly for commercial locations. A charging solution that goes beyond the slow charging done at home and the fast charging on motorways is therefore needed, in order to drive the adoption of electric vehicles in commercial spaces, public car parks and urban environments.

The company believes that electric vehicles should be accessible to everyone and not only to those who can charge in their own garage. That is why ABB’s C50 charging point is designed specifically for commercial and urban environments, making installation much simpler thanks to its small size and its ability to integrate with the electrical grid without the complications of high-power chargers.

DC charging feasible for destination locations

Destinations such as shopping centres, public car parks or workplaces need electric vehicle charging solutions that are functional, cost-effective and integrate seamlessly. ABB’s C50 charging point aims to meet these needs by replacing slow chargers with fast charging assets that are also financially profitable, adapting to existing business models and customer behaviour.

This new ABB charging point joins the company’s wide product range, which includes chargers of up to 400 kW. ABB is currently a sector leader and has partnerships with sports teams to extend its charging infrastructure, including Bayern Munich, Formula E and, more recently, NASCAR. Earlier in 2024, the company also demonstrated the operation of a prototype ultra-fast charging point capable of delivering 700 kW, connected to an MAN electric truck, although this product has not yet reached the market.
