Amazon more sustainable than ever after signing up 60 Mercedes eVito

Amazon is betting on electric mobility with the Mercedes-Benz eVito, a model of which it has bought 60 units for transport and delivery.

The electric car is establishing itself ever more firmly in the contemporary market, and not only to take care of our day-to-day needs, but also to handle delivery work. This type of powertrain is arriving to replace the diesel lorries, buses and vans that contribute to pollution, and Amazon no longer wants to be part of that. With this in mind, the company has acquired 60 Mercedes-Benz eVito vans to demonstrate its commitment to caring for the environment, and also to give these types of vehicles greater visibility.

However, Amazon will not be the only one using the electric vans from Mercedes-Benz; every associated delivery company will use them too. The US company has promised to use renewable energy in all of its activities before 2025, and adding both the eVito and the eSprinter to its fleet is a first step towards that goal.

Of course, other moves are being added to this one, such as the installation of charging points. Amazon has taken advantage of its site in Seville to install 60 charging points, which join the 80 already installed in Madrid, thus creating an efficient and effective electric vehicle fleet capable of guaranteeing deliveries despite the limited charging infrastructure that exists in Spain.

This new strategy brings the total number of electric vehicles belonging to the company to 1,800 across Europe. With this in mind, we are looking at a sizeable line-up that shows the steps Amazon wants to take and how deliveries will be carried out in a not-too-distant future.

Of course, Mercedes-Benz also contributes to this, not only with the eVito and eSprinter, but also with its EQ family. In the case of the electric vans, we find a 35 kWh battery that ensures a range of 150 kilometres, a capacity more than sufficient to cover urban journeys. In addition, its motor delivers 110 CV and 295 Nm of torque, figures that are complemented by a charging time of six hours, which can be fitted in once the deliveries are finished.

Whether we like it or not, electric powertrains are here to stay and will gradually make their way into every segment that makes up the automotive sector. Soon we will witness more brands and transport companies turning to this type of alternative, helping to make the planet cleaner and more sustainable.
