Amid further rumours of a sale, Daimler insists that Maybach is not for sale

For Daimler, the Maybach brand still remains a very important part of the German company’s history. For those of us looking in from the outside, Maybach is as superfluous a brand for Daimler as Hummer was for GM at the time.

However, less than 15 days ago, my colleague Denns told us about the danger Maybach faced of closing its doors amid the crisis and poor sales. Today, the rumours have multiplied and this time they come from China, where it was announced that the industrial group BYD was in talks to buy Maybach.

One of Daimler’s CEOs flatly stated that there is no other decision than to keep the brand. The denial also came from the BYD side, with a statement issued at the request of its chairman, who also clarified that there will indeed be a partnership with Daimler, but only to develop electric vehicles.

There’s no accounting for taste, but I wonder who else could possibly be excited by a Maybach Zeppelin other than an Arab sheikh or a member of European royalty. For everyone else, a Porsche Panamera would be better, if they could afford it.
