Android Auto is being updated to fit the different types of central screens

This major update turns Android Auto into a far more versatile, visually appealing and useful system, adapted to the modern screens of today’s cars.

Google has just announced the biggest update to Android Auto since its launch 11 years ago. From now on, the interface of this system will no longer be limited by the shape of the screen and, for the first time, it will fill it completely, whether it is rectangular, round or any other shape.

Google has shown how adaptable this new version of Android Auto is on very different screens: the circular one of a Mini, the irregular one of an Lucid Air and the trapezoidal one of the BMW iX3. On all of them, Google Maps is displayed edge to edge, while the virtual buttons stay within a clean, orderly rectangular area.

One of the most practical new features is the ability to pin widgets over the map. This way, the driver can check music, open the garage door, look at the calendar or view other apps without leaving navigation. Depending on the screen size, one or two rows of widgets can be added without losing sight of the route.

This improved experience is possible thanks to the new Google Maps with Immersive Navigation. The map has been completely redesigned in 3D, now showing buildings, overpasses, terrain relief, along with other important details such as lanes, traffic lights and stop signs in real time.

It is also worth highlighting that the new Android Auto will allow high-definition video playback. From the end of this year, compatible vehicles will be able to show content at 60 frames per second in Full HD. The first models to receive it will be those from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Skoda, Tata and Volvo.

However, for safety reasons video will only be shown when the vehicle is parked, and when driving starts the image will disappear automatically, although the audio will keep playing if the app allows it.

It is also worth noting that in the audio section, this new version of Android Auto includes support for Dolby Atmos, offering immersive spatial sound in compatible vehicles.

Finally, it should be noted that the Artificial Intelligence assistant Gemini has been integrated in a much deeper way. Users with access to Gemini Intelligence will be able to take advantage of its ability to understand context and anticipate the driver’s needs. For example, if a friend sends a message asking for an address, Gemini will be able to look for the information in chats, emails or the calendar and suggest an automatic reply. It will also be possible to ask it for more complex actions, such as ordering the usual meal through a food delivery service before arriving home.
