Audi and Qualcomm, two giants in their respective sectors, have announced that they will equip a select group of A8 vehicles with a high-speed global 3G connectivity solution that will make navigation capability far greater. Audi’s MMI Plus Connectivity will allow the vehicle to act as a mobile “hot spot”, enabling its occupants to connect their WiFi devices to the vehicle and access the Internet through it.

This service was shown some time ago in the Audi A5 Cabriolet concept and at the Mobile World Congress, held this week in Barcelona, where we will be able to see many more possible, future and real features of the connected car concept. You can find it at Pavilion 7 of the congress in the “Embedded Mobile Zone”.

The collaboration between both companies has earned positive words from the executives of each. Audi is delighted to be able to offer the most advanced Internet connectivity solutions with the world’s leading supplier of mobile network solutions, and in turn Qualcomm is delighted to work with a leading producer of technology and innovation applied to premium cars.

The possibilities of the Internet are endless for navigation applied to vehicles. Real-time traffic data, instant updates on road conditions, roadworks and problems and the possibility of integration with Google Earth are just a few that come to mind at first glance. If you are lucky enough to attend the congress held in Barcelona, I’m sure you’ll learn of many, many more.
