Audi cancels the next-generation A8 W12 and S8 and the VR6 engine

Apparently, according to some reports, Audi plans to cancel the most powerful and expensive versions of its A8 saloon, as well as the 3.2 V6 engine that powers several models in its range. Production of the A8 W12 and S8 will end alongside the current model, and for the moment there are no plans to replace them in the next generation.
The cancellation of the six-cylinder engine is not hard to justify, according to Edmunds, since it was an engine that was already several years old and lacked updated technology such as direct injection. In fact, its sales are being somewhat cannibalised by the versatile and modern 2.0 TSI.
But the top-of-the-range A8 will leave a gap which, although it was aimed at a small clientele, served in a way as a showcase for the technological prowess the four-ring manufacturer enjoyed. The V10 engine of the Lamborghini that equipped the S8 will remain present in Audi under the bonnets of the S6 and R8 V10.
On the other hand, Audi will be left vulnerable to competition in the segment, such as the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and BMW 760i. But it may also be that the group wants to make room for sales of the new and exclusive sports saloon of the Volkswagen group, the Porsche Panamera.
