Audi will include Android and iOS in its new models

The integration of Google and Apple’s operating systems into the infotainment systems of various models from several manufacturers is progressing, with more and more brands interested in establishing a standard for connecting their cars

That cars are increasingly connected to the internet and smartphones is something we all know. We have already discussed on this same blog the new connectivity features made possible by the use of the Android and iOS operating systems, and now it is the turn of Audi to incorporate them into its new models.

The manufacturers’ intention is to begin integrating all the functions found on smartphones running these two popular operating systems into car infotainment systems. That is, making the browser and the audio and video playback systems identical to those they habitually use on their phones through the Audi Multi Media Interface (MMI).

This integration will make interacting with the car’s systems simpler and more intuitive and will reduce driver distraction. In addition, Audi, together with Google and Apple, is working on a data transmission security system to prevent unwanted access to all the information managed in the car.

This initiative began with a group of car manufacturers and Google, who developed the Google Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) platform to integrate this operating system into vehicle systems. Audi is one of the founding members of this initiative and one of those whose project is most advanced in its models.

It will still take time to become a 100% reality, but there are already applications that can be used thanks to this project, such as navigation through Google Maps or the music streaming service Google Play Music. For now, other operating systems used by smartphones are left out.

The engineers at Audi are in constant contact with the teams at Google and Apple, seeking full integration, just as other manufacturers have done in recent months, working hard to maintain a standard for this type of system. In a few years, everything will be as standardized as possible.
