August sales are set to fall by more than 18%

The vehicle sales figures for August are not going to make for good news, as a drop of more than 18% compared with last year is expected. As a caveat, August 2012 was particularly busy due to the introduction of the VAT increase.

The month of August that we are closing today will not bring good news for those of us who regularly follow the evolution of the vehicle market in Spain. According to data provided by the consultancy MSI to La Tribuna de Automoción, sales this month will fall for the first time since June and will most likely be more than 18% compared with August 2012.

The year-on-year drop has an easy explanation. Last year around this time we were bracing for the VAT increase, so anyone planning to buy a car rushed to do so before prices went up. This year, the holiday month will leave us with a total of fewer than 40,000 units registered.

By channel, and pending confirmation of the last transactions, private buyers are expected to register around 28,325 units (compared with 37,000 last month), and 18.7% fewer than in August 2012.

The consultancy’s data forecasts that the business channel will fall again, this time by 18.8%, with 10,076 units registered, even though it had already dropped 30.2% in August 2012. Rental companies will also post negative numbers, with only 1,387 units registered and a 14.6% decline.

Otherwise, 7,154 transactions are still to be closed, which should be resolved in the remainder of tomorrow.
