Australia will have roads with lines that glow in the dark
Australia will become the first country to have roads with road markings that glow in the dark.

Australia will have roads with lines that glow in the dark. This safety measure could be rolled out across its entire road network very soon, as the Australian Government has invested more than 163 million euros to improve road safety. To do so, it is backing innovative techniques such as night-time illumination to keep drivers, pedestrians and even cyclists safe.
Roads with lines that glow in the dark will be the most important feature of Australia’s road safety programme. The photoluminescent road markings that glow in the dark will be fully visible to all road users, while during the day they will look like conventional markings.
As the state of Victoria has stated, “this innovation will give drivers a clearer definition when approaching intersections and bends and will greatly improve reaction time to road conditions”.
This is what the new road markings that glow in the dark will look like
Tarmac Linemarking will be the Australian company carrying out these glow-in-the-dark road markings. The company has also published the first images of a test on its official Facebook page. The result is very striking, even in complete darkness. The road markings are “clearly visible” thanks to the special “photoluminescent” finish.

For its part, Tarmac Linemarking has stated that “the new technology would be an exceptional product for pedestrians and bike lanes, roads, boat ramps and many other applications”. The use of roads with lines that glow in the dark will not only allow drivers to drive better and more safely at night, but also cyclists and motorcyclists will be able to travel with much greater visibility and safety.
The glow-in-the-dark road markings that the Australian government intends to introduce will be accompanied by a new illuminated surface with LEDs at intersections. They will also include other more reflective road markings to further enhance the safety of users of the country’s road network.
