BMW could use two-cylinder engines

KlausDraegerIn an interview conducted by the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport with Klaus Draeger, the man with the moustache you see in the photograph and one of those in charge of leading the development team at BMW, it has been stated that the possibility of BMW starting to use two-cylinder engines is real.

In Draeger’s view, the strategy to follow is to build small, highly efficient engines that will power the future city models of BMW and Mini, instead of using hybrid technology, which is very expensive.
The problem with hybrid systems in small cars is that the technological cost does not translate into a reduction in consumption significant enough to pay back the investment in the short or medium term. This is not the case in large models, where the consumption reduction is proportionally more worthwhile.

“Even with the 1 Series and 3 Series, the potential savings compared with larger engines is quite small”, said Draeger.

For the two-cylinder engines, the ideal is for each cylinder to have a capacity of 500 cm3, says Draeger. This engine will be associated with the front-wheel-drive platform on which the future BMW and Mini models will be based. The power estimated for an engine this small is between 80 and 100 CV, which is ideal for this segment.
