BMW M850i xDrive Coupé Night Sky: a Series 8 from another planet

The Night Sky version of the BMW Series 8 Coupé prepared by BMW Individual takes customization to the extreme, using materials that are not of this world.
The latest from BMW could not be more extravagant: it is a BMW Series 8 customized in honor of the meteor shower generated by asteroid EH 2003 as its fragments burn up upon entering Earth’s orbit. We are talking about the BMW Individual M850i xDrive Coupé Night Sky. A car in which the BMW Individual department has let its imagination soar higher than anyone else’s.
The basis for this creation is the top model of the new BMW Series 8 range, the BMW M850i xDrive Coupé, with a 530 CV V8 engine. According to BMW, its customization literally used “material from real meteorites”. This material can be seen in the central console inserts, the start button, the Steptronic gear lever and the iDrive system controller, as well as the door sill trims.

And no, this is not a joke, nor an April Fools’ prank out of season. In fact, BMW even enlisted the expertise of researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics. We imagine that to lend credibility and verify that the material used in this prototype really came from another planet, they also received advice on how to handle it.
In addition, this very special M850i includes many other elements, both inside and out, customized to simulate the structures normally found in meteorites. To produce these structures, the materials go through a prolonged cooling process under conditions that cannot be reproduced on Earth.
However, BMW has managed to reproduce this pattern using 3D printing techniques, with surprising results. They are applied to the interior roof, the central console finishes, the mirror housings and the trims of the side air vents.
Other interesting details in the customization of this BMW Series 8 bear the signature of BMW Motorsport. For example, the aluminium brake calipers were also manufactured using a 3D printing process, achieving a weight saving of 30 percent compared with conventional brake calipers.
Amid so much exclusivity, the fine-grain leather in three colours used for the upholstery, or the exterior finish with a two-tone paint and three layers of clear lacquer with particles of different sizes to convey a greater sense of depth, almost go unnoticed.
