BMW prepares new models based on the MINI platform

The brand BMW wants to use the UKL 1 platform that MINI uses to develop new projects over the coming years. This platform uses front-wheel drive, so all new models that emerge from it will, logically, have this feature. Besides the front-wheel drive, this platform is equipped with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine, among other things.

Currently, several MINI models are being built on this platform, which will now become part of the BMW family. The coming months will see the arrival of eight MINI models with the UKL 1 platform, which will be complemented by six models from the German brand.

The first model announced to use this platform will be the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, the compact MPV. The next will be a seven-seat version of this model. They will not be the only ones, as BMW also plans to launch a successor to the X1 and X2 models, which, although they will use this platform, will also be available with all-wheel drive.

A little later, in 2017, the BMW Z2 roadster will arrive, another of the projects expected soon on the platform that will serve as the basis for the MINI Countryman and Clubman, among others.

The new version of the 1 Series could be slightly larger than the current one, even surpassing the wheelbase of the five-door MINI, so it will be somewhat bigger and offer more comfort for its occupants.

One of the things that may bother enthusiasts of driving a BMW is the switch from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive. The company assures that there will be no problem at all and it is not expected to even be noticeable.
