The BMW i8 will soon get a sibling with a Spyder body, sooner than expected. Last year we even showed you a video of what the convertible version of the i8 would look like, although at that time the coupé variant had not even been presented yet.

However, at this year’s Beijing Motor Show BMW showed the Spyder variant of the i8, which reportedly was approved for production and that the first models would be available by 2015. Although BMW has not officially commented on this latest news, the new variant is already being discussed online, though no changes are visible when it comes to the engine. That said, BMW has had a hard time making up its mind, since some problems have come up.

The engineering department has not yet been able to resolve some structural rigidity problems in the chassis of the convertible; the work had focused mainly on the coupé, so some aspects of the conversion to a convertible reportedly remained unresolved. It is said that the carbon fibre and aluminium materials have not fit well with the strength values needed for a convertible.

That said, the Spyder is not expected to fall within the same price range as the i8 coupé. The Spyder is expected to be much more expensive, now confirmed by the fact that the model will require more work and development from the engineering department.
