Mercedes-Benz decides to end production of the current W461 G-Class

If you’re one of those who enjoys off-road driving, you’ll already know that the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the G-Wagen, is one of the most admired all-terrain vehicles for its toughness in every kind of terrain. Favored by several European armies in their most spartan versions, the G-Class began as a vehicle with only the essentials, and over its history it evolved into versions with a little more equipment.
Although sales have remained strong throughout the G-Class’s run (this year has been its best ever for sales), Mercedes-Benz has decided to close a whole chapter in the history of this model. Changes to European emissions and consumption regulations are just around the corner, and the W461’s diesel V6 has not been able to keep up with them. For this reason, Mercedes has decided to stop manufacturing the current model.
Does this mean the rest of the G-Class is in danger of disappearing? It seems not. Partly thanks to the sales figures it reached during 2013, Mercedes announces that the future of the G-Class is secure and that it will continue developing future generations of this noble all-terrain vehicle.
