BMW X1 2016: with front-wheel drive and three-cylinder engines
Just before its official unveiling, the first images of the BMW X1 2016 were leaked online. We now know its new look and all the details about its equipment, engines and trim levels. The novelty will include front-wheel drive as standard.

The new generation of the BMW X1 has just been presented, and its update, both in terms of styling and performance, gives it a more robust look. Just yesterday, the first images were revealed through a leak that spread across the entire web, though we did not know any of the details. The new X1 is expected to reach dealerships next October.
With a more robust appearance, the BMW X1 2016 features a design that elevates it one step higher on the scale of the Bavarian brand’s SUVs. The previous generation showed a hybrid image between an MPV and a compact crossover; now, however, it inherits characteristic traits of the X3, X4, X5 and X6 SUVs. The front features a sportier bumper with a prominent grille flanked by LED headlights. The plastic cladding on the lower part of the bodywork highlights its crossover image, while the roof slopes gently down to the integrated spoiler above the tailgate.

To add some character to the new X1, BMW has designed three styling packages that enhance its look according to customer preferences. The Sport Line, xLine and M Sport packages are part of the optional equipment, and the latter in particular includes a specific aerodynamic kit, 18-inch light alloy wheels, sport seats in Alcantara, and matt blue and aluminium details, among other cabin touches.
And it is inside where the customization options are broadest. Entry-level models will come with cloth seats, silver inserts and gloss black details, as well as air conditioning and the standalone iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch screen. Optional extras include Dakota leather seats or oak wood inserts, among others.
Also available as optional equipment on the BMW X1 2016 is the head-up display system and the Driving Assistant Plus package, which includes active cruise control with Stop & Go function, lane departure warning, traffic jam assistant, collision warning, pedestrian warning and city braking.

As for engines, the new X1 will arrive on the market with seven different powertrains, four diesel options and three petrol ones. Firstly, the entry-level version will feature a three-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine delivering 136 CV in petrol form and 116 CV in diesel. The four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel units produce 150 CV and 330 Nm, 190 CV and 400 Nm, and 231 CV and 450 Nm of torque; while the two remaining petrol options are a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine producing 192 CV and 280 Nm, or 231 CV and 350 Nm of torque.
Depending on the selected engine, the BMW X1 2016 will be paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a new eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox. Front-wheel drive comes as standard, while the all-wheel-drive alternative is available as optional equipment or standard on the higher trim levels.
