BMW X6 M and BMW X6 M Competition: up to 625 hp for the brand's SUV

The new BMW X6 M and BMW X6 M Competition have just been unveiled, two radical versions that deliver the performance of a true supercar.

Not long ago we met the third generation of the BMW X6, the largest coupé-style SUV in the brand’s range. However, one launch we had all been waiting for was still missing: its most radical variants.

The BMW X6 M and the BMW X6 M Competition have arrived to take the top of the range as the most powerful and sporty versions. The brand has taken advantage of the presentation of its siblings, the BMW X5 M and BMW X5 M Competition, to do the same with the X6.

The BMW X6 M features a more aggressive look

Both the “standard” version and the BMW X6 M Competition differ from the rest of the range in their larger air intakes, the typical M-style mirrors, new gills and an aggressive rear diffuser that houses the four exhaust outlets.

The cabin combines luxury and sportiness perfectly, so the BMW X6 M gets new trim and specific upholstery, along with new sports seats. In addition, the BMW Live Cockpit Professional could not be missing: alongside the digital instrument cluster, it features a second screen on the centre console and a parking assistant. This comprehensive infotainment system includes all myBMW artificial intelligence services.

Furthermore, BMW has widened the wheel arches to accommodate 21-inch wheels on the front axle and 22-inch on the rear. These are standard equipment on the Competition and optional on the “regular” version.

Same engine as the previous generation, but with more power

At its core, it uses the same engine as the previous generation, but tuned to deliver 25 more horsepower. Under the bonnet, therefore, is a 4.4-litre V8 with two turbochargers capable of producing 600 hp, although if you choose the BMW X6 M Competition, it rises to 625 hp.

To raise this power figure, BMW has modified the cooling systems and the oil supply systems. In addition, the engine mounts have been stiffened, so the movements and vibrations of the engine block have been reduced.

This powertrain is paired with the M Steptronic automatic gearbox with 8 ratios, whose operation can be adjusted via Drivelogic. To transmit this power to the tarmac, the BMW X6 M has all-wheel drive, although the electronic limited-slip differential sends more torque to the rear wheels in almost every situation.

Thanks to this combination, the BMW X6 M accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and the Competition does so in 3.8 seconds. Furthermore, the top speed is limited to 250 km/h on both variants, although with the M Drivers Package fitted it can reach 290 km/h.

The M Motorsport division has worked to make the chassis more rigid. In addition, adjustable-hardness dampers, active anti-roll bars and steering quicker and more precise than the rest of the range have been fitted.

The M Mode selector has also been added to the centre console. With it, we can adjust the stiffness of the suspension, the steering setup, the brake feel, and the response of the engine and transmission.
