Bosch's smart sun visor to prevent sun glare
Bosch is one of the most active suppliers when it comes to cutting-edge automotive technology, and at CES it will present a new smart sun visor

There is one thing that always causes us problems when driving. The sun, when it sits low on the horizon, produces glare that prevents us from paying attention to the road. For that reason there are different ways to keep the sun from dazzling us. Basically, it is a matter of blocking the sunlight and preventing it from reaching our eyes so directly. But this creates another problem. If it is an opaque system, it stops us from having good visibility of the road.
Another way to avoid this glare is to wear sunglasses, a practical, simple and efficient option. But we don’t always have sunglasses, and they are also an external element to the car, so we may not have them when we need them. That is why Bosch has thought about how to solve all of this and has designed a system based on artificial intelligence.

The visor proposed by Bosch aims to stop being the typical opaque visor and become an element that allows safe driving without the drawbacks that this type of element presents. To achieve this, it has made use of Artificial Intelligence and designed a visor that prevents glare without reducing the driver’s visibility.
This Bosch smart visor consists of a fixed piece that is transparent and allows only a part of it to be darkened, depending on the driver’s needs. To determine which parts of the visor need to be darkened, the system uses artificial intelligence. A camera pointed at the driver’s face tracks the sunlight and determines the exact point where the sun is causing glare.
Software recognises this point and determines which segments of the visor should be darkened to prevent glare, keeping the rest of the visor transparent. The liquid crystal technology allows the visor to be darkened in sections, and the algorithm keeps that area as small as possible. If the sunlight changes, the darkened sections change too, so glare is always avoided.
The CES will be the stage where this technology is shown and where Bosch will contact manufacturers to include this smart visor in several future models. For now, there is no news about any interested brand, but we may soon see this technology in one of the models that will arrive shortly.
