Buick is not for sale, nor will Opel have Arab shareholding

Over these past few days, a series of rumours has been circulating concerning General Motors. The first, spread by the newspaper China Business News, claimed that the automotive group SAIC, the American giant’s partner in China, appeared to be interested in acquiring Buick. However, both GM and SAIC have denied this report, which is reasonable given that Buick is one of the brands GM intends to keep during its restructuring.
The other denial concerns the statements made by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the German newspaper Westdeutschen Allgemeinen Zeitung, in which he expressed his desire to enter the share capital of Opel. This was also confirmed by the works council chairman at the German plant of Opel in Bochum, and the German authorities approved it. But now, Automotive News confirms that an official source from the government of Abu Dhabi has stated that there are no plans to buy shares in Opel. Therefore, the German manufacturer will have to keep looking for other investors if it wants the Merkel government to grant it its aid.
