Buyer's guide to compact electric SUVs and five key models for 2026

With this guide we advise you when buying your next compact electric SUV and suggest five models to consider

Volkswagen Id.4

The electric SUV market in 2026 has established itself as the most sought-after option for drivers looking for versatility and real-world range for everyday use in Spain. The offer is wide and raises questions about usable range, associated costs and compatibility with charging infrastructure. Two statements that sum up the context: the WLTP range does not always reflect actual kilometres in everyday conditions, and the choice of charger affects both how quickly you can use the car and its running costs. Buyers should prioritise real use—city, peri-urban or frequent long journeys—and understand how the initial purchase price translates into total spending over several years.

This buyer’s guide is for…

This guide is aimed at drivers who need a vehicle with more space and a raised driving position, who value electric efficiency but need versatility for mixed journeys: regular urban trips with road getaways. It is not the best option for anyone who only drives in cities in an environment with extreme parking problems, or for anyone seeking maximum sporting performance without range compromises.

In the Spanish context, it is worth considering real use: access to charging points at home, availability of public charging on inter-provincial journeys, and the impact of terrain and climate on range.

Common options within the segment

Within the electric SUV segment, there are proposals focused on efficiency, others on space and modularity, and some that prioritise fast charging and technology. Lightweight models reduce consumption but offer less space and battery capacity; mid-size SUVs balance range and habitability; large ones deliver more range and power at the cost of weight and price. The typical compromise is between vehicle mass, battery size, charging speed and unit cost per kilometre.

In practice, choosing means deciding whether you need a bigger battery for frequent trips or a more efficient body for mostly urban use.

Key criteria for choosing well

Realistic versus homologated range: check WLTP figures and compare them with independent tests or user data. Winter range can drop noticeably, and so can range on mountain roads.

Power and charging speed: not only the maximum engine power matters, but also the battery’s ability to accept power and the presence of reliable fast chargers on your usual routes.

Stability and comfort on the road: weight and battery distribution affect handling; suspension and insulation determine comfort on long journeys.

Genuinely useful technology: driver assistance systems, battery thermal management and air-conditioning efficiency matter more than cosmetic extras.

Total cost of purchase and use: include insurance, specific maintenance, battery degradation and the cost per kWh of public versus home charging.

It depends on how you drive

Urban drivers with home charging will prefer models with a smaller battery and better efficiency; those who travel frequently on motorways will prioritise larger batteries and high-power charging. The Mediterranean climate means less penalty from cold, but in the North and mountain areas real range can drop appreciably. The practical profile also includes the need to tow or carry loads: in those cases, checking homologations and energy capacity is essential.

Real price: what you should know

There is a difference between financed and cash prices: financing offers can lower the monthly instalment but increase the total cost through interest. The “from” price reflects the basic version without options; fitting option packs can add several thousand euros. Local taxes, installing a home charging point and essential accessories (cables, adapters) increase the initial outlay.

The final price varies with promotions, stock and dealership; interpreting the “from” price requires checking the exact version and the equipment included.

Reference models on the market

Volkswagen ID.4 (from 43,000 €*)

A compact vehicle in size and practical approach, aimed at families seeking a balance between habitability and range for mixed journeys. It suits daily commuting and occasional weekend trips well.

The best

A good balance between interior space and energy efficiency; a wide service and after-sales network in Spain.

The room for improvement

Weight and aerodynamics that penalise consumption on motorways at high speeds.

Hyundai Kona Electric (from 36,000 €*)

A more compact and efficient approach, designed for users who prioritise consumption and running costs without giving up good technological equipment and urban accessibility.

The best

Low consumption and a good range-to-price ratio in town and on peri-urban routes.

The room for improvement

Less cargo space than mid-size SUVs; on long journeys the smaller battery requires charging planning.

Kia Ev6

Kia EV6 (from 44,500 €*)

Design focused on efficiency and performance, with fast-charging capabilities that make it ideal for those who combine motorway journeys with demanding daily use.

The best

High fast-charging capacity and good handling for its segment.

The room for improvement

Entry price and the cost of versions with larger battery and drivetrain.

Ford Mustang Mach-E (from 46,000 €*)

A proposal focused on driving experience and technology, aimed at users who value a sportier feel without giving up SUV practicality.

The best

Good power delivery and a service ecosystem for long journeys.

The room for improvement

Consumption and weight that affect range under demanding use.

Volvo XC40 Recharge (from 48,500 €*)

A compact premium option that prioritises safety and comfort, aimed at those seeking an electric SUV with refined interiors and advanced driver assistance.

The best

Build quality, active safety and comfort on long journeys.

The room for improvement

High base price, and options that quickly increase the final bill.

Purchase grants

Purchase grants in 2026: Plan Auto+ and tax benefits

Main amounts of the 2026 Plan Auto+

– Direct grants of up to 4,500 € for electric passenger cars.

– Up to 5,000 € for light vans in category N1.

– Retroactive effect from 1 January 2026.

– Approximate budget allocation of 400 million euros.

Who can benefit and priority criteria

Beneficiaries: private individuals, self-employed workers and companies, with priority given according to the EEE criterion (Electric, Economic and European). BEVs are incentivised more than PHEVs. Vehicles priced below 35,000 € receive greater aid; between 35,000 € and 45,000 € the aid is reduced. An additional incentive is provided if final assembly or the batteries take place in the European Union.

Additional requirements and tax advantages

A minimum discount of 1,000 € from the dealership is mandatory. There is a 15% income tax deduction (IRPF) up to a maximum of 3,000 €. The tax validity of these advantages extends until 31 December 2026.

Management and possible regional aid

Management is coordinated by the Ministry of Industry together with the Autonomous Communities. Additional regional programmes may exist; the Plan Cambia 360 in the Community of Madrid is one example. At the time of writing, it is not officially confirmed whether all regional aid is compatible with the 2026 Plan Auto+.

Common buying mistakes

Buying based solely on the WLTP range figure without checking real-world behaviour on usual routes.

Underestimating the need for charging infrastructure at home or at your usual parking spot.

Not considering the total cost (insurance, specific maintenance, loss of value and energy expenditure) and focusing only on the purchase price.

Choosing versions with too many unnecessary extras that raise the price without improving the main functionality.

With this context and clear criteria, the natural next step is to compare current specific versions of each model to better judge how they fit your use and budget.
