CATL promises more than 1,000 km of range with its new Shenxing Plus LFP battery pack

The renowned Chinese battery cell manufacturer took advantage of the Beijing Auto Show to unveil its new Shenxing Plus battery pack with lithium iron phosphate cells. The company also highlighted the considerable charging power supported by these new battery packs.

CATL officially presented first-generation Shenxing cells in the summer of 2023, promising ranges of up to 700 km at the time. The Chinese firm has needed just eight months to now unveil the next generation, which, according to the manufacturer itself, will make it possible to travel more than 1,000 kilometres on a single charge.

Gap Han, Chief Technology Officer of CATL’s electric vehicle division, has stated that the company’s new battery packs are capable of delivering these more than 1,000 km of range with 4C ultra-fast charging power. That is, in the hypothetical case that the capacity of one of these battery packs was 80 kWh, the supported charging power would then be 320 kW. Four times its storage capacity.

A new step forward

At CATL, they believe that electric models equipped with this new battery technology will bring electric mobility into a new reality, in which long journeys will be possible without ever suffering even the slightest range anxiety.

The company explains that the LFP cells integrated into the new Shenxing Plus battery packs have an energy density of 205 Wh per kilogram. CATL also states that surpassing the range of first-generation Shenxing battery packs has been possible through the development of a new nanoparticle technology applied to the cathode of each cell.

Beyond the cells used, CATL asserts that the new housings developed to hold all these latest-generation cells in a stable manner are another important advance that will have a considerable impact on the adoption of electric mobility. Additionally, the company has noted that these new housings for Shenxing Plus cells are compatible with cell-to-pack configurations cell-to-pack.
