Changes are coming for the Nissan... at least in the interior

The arrival of electric models and autonomous driving will bring changes to the interiors of Nissan models from 2020 onwards

When we had the chance to see the Nissan IMx, a concept the Japanese brand presented at the Tokyo Motor Show, it surprised us quite a bit. It was a fairly attractive model with design elements that make it an interesting car to enjoy. And among the changes we saw in this electric crossover with autonomous driving technology, its interior stood out. The capabilities of an autonomous vehicle are different from those of a traditional car, so the driver, for lack of a better term, of these vehicles will have different needs.

This will carry over to the cabin interior, and some manufacturers are already experimenting with this kind of interior. Nissan does not want to be left behind, so the company is set to begin work on an innovative cabin that will rise above the proposals of other manufacturers and be practical and striking.

The chosen date, as we expected, is 2020, which in theory will mark the mass launch of electric and hybrid vehicles. The new Nissan interiors will not be limited to electric and autonomous cars but will be incorporated across the rest of the Nissan range. This means that the path the brand takes from that point on will be guided by this design style.

This shift in trend will change the very structure of cars, opening up many possibilities for restructuring vehicle components. For Nissan, the disappearance of combustion engines means more space, so the location of elements such as the air conditioning system can be redesigned to occupy the space the engine will no longer use.

And there is a rush to move in that direction, because all electric vehicle manufacturers will present new interiors adapted to the characteristics of their vehicles, and Nissan wants to be ahead. What surprises does the Japanese manufacturer have in store? We expect not to wait long to see it, since the Nissan IMx will reach the market in a couple of years, either in a production version or by incorporating some of its elements into the new Nissan Qashqai or any other model where they want to innovate.
