Chery promises up to 1,200 km of range with its new generation of batteries
These new batteries will not only offer a wide range, but will also stand out in many other areas, such as the charging power they can handle and their durability.
The Chinese manufacturer Chery aims to position itself as a global leader, not only in vehicle production but also for its advances in battery technology. At the Global Innovation Conference of Chery 2024, held in the Chinese city of Wuhu, the company announced the creation of its own ultra-fast charging battery brand, under the name Kunpeng. With this new brand, Chery promises to revolutionise the market by introducing a new generation of batteries capable of travelling up to 1,200 km on a single charge.
To make this possible, Kunpeng aims to reach energy densities of 400 Wh/kg by the end of this year and 600 Wh/kg by 2025, marking a milestone in battery technology. Kunpeng’s product range will consist of lithium iron phosphate batteries in different formats, all with 6C ultra-fast charging capability. That is, supporting a charging power -in kW- six times higher than the battery’s capacity -in kWh-.

In this way, Kunpeng promises that it will be possible to add 400 km of range in just 5 minutes. These batteries will also withstand a wide range of operating temperatures with little loss of performance, from -40 degrees Celsius to 65 degrees Celsius. Another important feature of these batteries is their durability, as they will be able to withstand more than 3,000 charge cycles, allowing them a service life 20 percent longer than the industry standard.
The new electric vehicles from Chery are going to make headlines
Kunpeng plans to begin mass production of its new generation of batteries in 2027, although 2026 will be when it begins pilot tests. In this way, in just a few years we will begin to see how they are integrated across Chery’s entire range of electric vehicles, offering greater range and shorter charging times.

Chery reached global sales of almost 45,000 vehicles last June, and is aiming to reach 100,000 units per month before the end of the year. According to Yin Tongyue, current chairman of Chery Automobile, this growth reflects not only growing demand but also confidence in Chery’s innovation to redefine the future of electric mobility.
