The Deepal S05 compact SUV is already on sale in China

At present, the Deepal S05 is only on sale in China, but we should not rule out the possibility that it will also reach Europe at some point next year.

Deepal, the electric car brand of Chinese automotive giant Changan, has just begun selling the S05 compact SUV in its home market. This new model promises to combine futuristic styling with advanced technology and is available both with a fully electric drivetrain and with a range extender.

The fully electric version of the Deepal S05 has a 175 kW motor delivering 320 Nm of torque, mounted on the rear axle, paired with a 56.12 kWh LFP battery pack with which it is capable of covering up to 510 kilometres on a single charge, under the rather generous Chinese CLTC homologation cycle.

From the Deepal S05’s list of technical specifications, its top speed, limited to 180 km/h, and its 0-100 km/h acceleration of 7.3 seconds also stand out. This compact SUV additionally supports 3C fast charging, which allows the battery’s state of charge to rise from 30 to 80 percent in just 15 minutes.

Nothing can stop you

On the other hand, the EREV range-extender variant combines a 160 kW electric motor with a 1.5-litre, 72 kW combustion engine. In this case the battery pack is, as might be expected, of smaller capacity at 27.28 kWh, somewhat less than half. That is enough, in any case, to cover around 200 km on a single charge under the CLTC homologation cycle.

Obviously, if these 200 km prove insufficient and no fast charging point is available, or you simply do not want to stop to recharge, it is possible to let the range extender work. In this way, using the combustion engine as a generator, the EREV version of the Deepal S05 will be able to cover a total of up to 1,234 kilometres before exhausting the battery charge and the petrol tank.

In this EREV version of the Deepal S05, the top speed is slightly reduced to 175 km/h, while the time needed to reach 100 km/h from a standstill rises to 7.9 seconds. The manufacturer also promises that raising the battery pack’s state of charge in this version from 30 to 80 percent takes around 20 minutes.

With dimensions of 4.62 metres long, 1.90 wide and 1.60 high, the Deepal S05 is a fairly spacious vehicle, something also helped by its 2.88-metre wheelbase. The Chinese manufacturer offers five exterior paint colours and three interior trim levels.

It lacks nothing

In terms of technology, this compact SUV stands out for having its own operating system, Deepal OS 3.0, which runs on a 15.4-inch central screen with 2.5K resolution, supported by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip. The vehicle also features an augmented reality head-up display and a futuristic D-shaped steering wheel.

Nor is there any shortage of advanced driver assistance, which relies on five HD cameras, five millimetre-wave radars and twelve ultrasonic sensors, offering adaptive cruise control and parking assistance functions.

In China, the fully electric version of the Deepal S05 has a base price of 119,900 yuan, which at the current exchange rate comes to roughly 15,550 euros. Although Changan has already announced its intention to begin selling its electric models in Europe in the last quarter of this year, starting with the Deepal S07, it is currently unknown whether the S05 will also reach our market. Nevertheless, this seems the most logical outcome.
