Cross-regional travel during Easter Week: here's what we know

Although many of Spain’s autonomous communities are beginning to lift mobility restrictions, Easter Week is compromised by closures.

Once again, Easter Week arrives, and this is usually the time when many Spaniards take advantage of well-deserved holidays. But this year is special, so there are many questions about what we can and cannot do. Among them, knowing which autonomous communities will relax the anti-COVID measures and which ones will not allow normal travel. This is what we know so far.

Communities that remain closed

Although March has led several autonomous communities to consider easing mobility restrictions, and some will allow free movement between their provinces, they will not lift the perimeter closure with other communities. This means that, at least for now, they cannot be accessed from other communities.

Castile and León

The autonomous community of Castile and León will not lift the perimeter closure at least until Easter Week. The regional government has planned this closure until May 9, although it does not rule out the possibility that it could be lifted earlier. For the time being, Easter Week in Castile and León will see the perimeter closure maintained, although movement between provinces will be allowed.

Valencian Community

One of Spain’s premier tourist destinations will remain closed during Easter Week. This will prevent people from other communities from accessing Castellón, Valencia or Alicante during the holiday period.

Principality of Asturias

This autonomous community will not open the possibility of travelling there during Easter Week. Asturians will also not be able to leave the region to enjoy their holidays.

Region of Murcia

Murcia will remain closed for now, with no problem in reopening if the figures improve within fifteen days. For the moment, forecasts indicate that it will remain closed during Easter Week.

Communities open during Easter Week

For the time being, only the Canary Islands have declared that travel there will be allowed with no other limitation than taking a diagnostic test. This requirement will be in force at least until April 5. So it is currently the only region that, as of today, March 1, 2021, is certain to have open access from outside.

Communities in doubt

Although we have already seen that there are several communities that will remain closed initially but could open when the time comes, there are others that have not yet announced their intentions. Many of these autonomous communities are waiting to see the trend in infections during the first week of March, so until March 8 many of them are not clear about what to do.

Others, such as Cantabria, tie the reopening to the progress of vaccination. So for now expectations are not at all encouraging, and instead of the idea of “saving Easter Week“, the priority is “ensuring health“. We will have to wait and see how March develops to find out what will happen during Easter Week. One thing is certain: it is best not to make holiday plans for this month.
