CUPRA Formentor VZ5: the most radical version of the Spanish crossover is here, for just 7,000 lucky buyers
CUPRA has kept its word and has just unveiled the new CUPRA Formentor VZ5, the most radical and powerful version of the Spanish crossover.
CUPRA has delivered on what it promised with the presentation of the new CUPRA Formentor VZ5, the top-of-the-range variant fitted with the five-cylinder engine. To celebrate its third birthday, the Spanish brand has decided to offer a special vehicle, and the chosen base is its first homegrown product. With this premise we arrive at the Formentor VZ5, a very special variant that, unfortunately, is limited to a production run of 7,000 units in order to make the VZ5 even more unique.
Besides the mechanical changes, CUPRA has also taken the opportunity to introduce aesthetic updates in the cabin and, above all, improvements in performance. With all of this, we have the first product from the Volkswagen Group that, without being a Audi, boasts one of the best engines of recent times: the 2.5 TSI five-cylinder.
When it comes to styling, the home-grown brand has kept the attractive design of the Formentor virtually unchanged. The main novelties include a new exclusive colour for the VZ5 version called Taiga Grey, specific 20-inch alloy wheels, a quad exhaust outlet arranged diagonally and painted in copper, a body height lowered by 10 millimetres and a new carbon-fibre diffuser.

Inside, the standouts are new bucket-style seats named CUPBucket, which can be upholstered in black or Petrol Blue. The brand also introduces a new brown colour for the conventional seats, and a new infographic specific to the Formentor VZ5 has been adopted; otherwise the technology section remains intact.
Nevertheless, the real highlight is in the mechanical section, where the 2.5-litre five-cylinder now sits, an engine that for this occasion produces 390 CV and 480 Nm of torque. With these figures, the Spanish crossover manages a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. The formula also adds Akebono six-piston brake calipers with discs of up to 370 millimetres and the DCC system, which allows the suspension stiffness to be varied across 15 different levels.

For now, CUPRA has not revealed the price of the CUPRA Formentor VZ5, but we know it will reach the market during the last quarter of 2021. Given that production will be limited to 7,000 units, the brand is expected to ask for a considerably higher outlay compared with the Formentor VZ. Time will tell.
