De Tomaso P72, the brand's first supercar sees the light of day. What does it offer?

The De Tomaso P72 is the brand’s first supercar to see the light of day, although for now it is a unit intended for dynamic testing.

It has been just over five years since the revived brand De Tomaso unveiled its new project. It was a supercar that aimed to break the mould and, despite its presentation, it resisted reaching the market. Until now, since the first unit built of this almost unique model has been revealed. And it is that only 72 units of the De Tomaso P72 will be built.

Each of them will have a price of 1.6 million euros, although it should be noted that this first P72 is not going to be delivered to a customer. It is a unit that will be used for dynamic testing, so it is a test vehicle. We can see that the bodywork is covered in carbon fibre panels. These have been assembled by hand by a small team of workers who have created this very special unit.

The chassis is also made of this material and has also been hand-assembled by the same team. The seats have also received a very attractive design, which makes them designer seats that could be found in any furniture store rather than in the cabin of a car.

The upholstery lends an elegant touch thanks to its cream tone. The gear lever is copper-coloured and exposes the mechanism. The bronze colour is repeated on the instrument panel. According to the brand, they drew inspiration from the world of jewellery, and this is why these colours and materials are used to give it a very attractive image.

But all this image would be nothing if there were not a heart as attractive as the rest of the car. The De Tomaso P72 has under its skin a 5.0-litre turbocharged V8 engine that produces 570 CV of power and a maximum torque of 900 Nm. All this power is transmitted to the rear axle, so this is a rear-wheel-drive car.

In addition to the P72, De Tomaso is working on another supercar model, the P900, intended for the track. It will be based on the P72, although in this case it will have different aerodynamic elements and will be powered by a naturally aspirated V12 or a V10 engine. This comes from a 1997 Benetton B197 F1 single-seater.
