Diesel engines for the M versions of BMW

Premium brands are increasingly introducing diesel technology in their performance models. Multiple advances in this technology have turned diesel powertrains into a viable alternative to petrol engines, even in competition, since they deliver the same power with a higher torque and, despite being turbocharged, in order to match the power of petrol engines, they offer superior durability and reliability.
For this reason, BMW is considering fitting these engines in the M versions of its models, as Albert Biermann, head of development of BMW M, stated in an interview with Autocar magazine. The most likely models to test this idea will be the latest BMW SUVs, the X5 M and X6 M, in order to compete with the models of Audi.
Given the sporting results these engines deliver and the great reliability they offer, it would not be far-fetched to think that in the future BMW might consider fitting a diesel engine in an M3 or an M5. They would lose a little of their acceleration and liveliness, as a petrol engine is more responsive, but they would keep the same power.
